A Dream

Alex gasped and woke. His face dripped. His heart raced. It was just a dream. It had to be. Just a dream.

He remembered headlights glowing through the early morning fog, aimed right at him, before the car veered and drove down the embankment and into the river. He jumped in after it, pounding on the window as the hulk of metal sank slowly to the bottom.

The driver turned and looked at him, calmly, eye to eye. Her hair seemed to float even before the vehicle filled with water. A bobble head dog nodded emphatically on the dash as Alex tried in vain to smash the driver's side window.

There was no frantic struggle within the car to disengage the seat belt and escape. Instead, she seemed to settle back  as though watching a drive in movie. He thought he heard her sigh, but it was probably just the blood pounding in his head and his sense of self preservation screaming at him to surface. So he did.

He got up and walked to the bathroom leaving a trail of wet footprints behind him.
